The Moon is Calling Me

The full moon is calling me
I slip outside into the night,
I follow the path to the midnight bay,
with water flat,
moon puddles like sparkles on black.

I see my old friend, The Bear,
watching over me from the sky,
She points me to my True North
where her Little Bear resides.

I hear the ancient moon songs,
I feel the ancient moon tides,
I dance my own moon dance
In purple shadows and silvery light,
Rejoicing in this wildness:

I have been inside too long.

September Moon

Moonrise over the Rincon Mountains
The harvest moon
rising full behind the Rincon Mountains,
a glowing orb in a cobalt sky,
with poorwills calling from the rocky canyons
and a dry desert wind running free
like a ghost horse
between cactus and sagebrush
telling me an age-old story,
whispers from the past
illuminated by the light
of a September moon.

I Cannot Tell a Lie

Sandy Point Sunset, Plum Island, MA

I could tell you that an elephant walked
right through my Arizona yard today
stomping my cactus into a mess,
leaving my garden all a wreck!
I could tell you that I took a ride on a feathery cloud
over the mountains through an azure sky,
when I was bored at lunch time.
I could tell you I turn into a silver mare at night
with wings on my feet and a silken mane,
and that I follow a moonbeam path into the starry sky
Galloping all the way!
I could tell you I was lost at sea
tossed and tumbled in cold blue waves,
and just as I was about to drown
a humpback whale brought me home,
and sang to me along the way!
I could tell you I once met Madame Curie
And she let me help her in her laboratory,
And that I was really the one who discovered
The magic and mystery of radium.
I could tell you I crossed the wide prairie
with grasses long and flaxen in autumn
with long skirts flowing in a prairie wind,
and buffalo thundering by!
I could tell all of these things and more,

But…

as He of the Cherry Tree said,
I cannot tell a lie, so I’ll tell a story instead!

Slowly, Silently Now the Moon

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Is following me in the sky
I wonder how much the old man sees
When I am walking by?
And does he see the owls at night
Fly through the darkening sky?
And does he see the hummingbirds’ nests
In the sycamores and the pines?
Slowly, silently now the moon
Is watching migration swing
Into the fullest feathered night
As all the birds take wing,
Back to summer breeding grounds,
Back to cooler climes,
Where mating and nesting are soon begun
In the sycamores and the pines!

Maybe it's the Moonlight

Maybe it's the moonlight that's keeping me awake,
here on this summer night with teenagers wandering the streets
and cats fighting in the yard.
I heard their caterwauling,
then a car goes by,
and I am sitting here
in the false glow of my computer screen
missing out on moonlight.

I think I'll take a break
and shut this computer down
so I can hear the soft plop of water droplets from the recent rain,
and see the silver light of the summer moon
as it slips down the velvet sky towards dawn.

Skywatch Friday: The Moon is a Pearl

Like the inside of an oyster shell
The dark skies open
Revealing the slippery flesh
Of parting clouds
Revealing the pearl
The glowing orb
Luminescent and full
In her monthly glory
One night and day
Before she slowly dissolves
Into darkness
And forms again.

Skywatch Friday: Summer Solstice Moon

(Mt. Fagan with Summer Solstice Moonrise: pastel on paper by kathiesbirds June 2008)

A sliver of shining silver
slips from behind the stones,
the rocky, craggy, mountains,
and throws
silver light beams over the desert,
silver moon rays into the sky,
a glistening,
............glowing,
.....................moon balloon,
in a summer solstice sky.

Moonlight Princess

(Painting by Kathie 1999 Acrylic on canvas)

Moonlight Princess

She peeps around the corner as the moon reaches its full height,
A strange tingling now posses her as her eyes drink in the sight,
The bluish glow it beckons her, the field is coaxing sweet,
with a glance to see that she’s alone, she rushes out and greets it.
A magic world it is to her, by virtue of the moon’s transforming power,
Everything glows mysteriously; every leaf, every stone, every flower.
She know with every trembling limb who she is and what she’s here for,
With a leap, a twirl and then a bob, she dances on the grassy floor.
The little princess of the night is calling to the stars
She dances with the wafting clouds, with Venus, Moon, and Mars.
The breeze soon joins the graceful dance, cavorting on the lawn,
It bends the trees and tossed leaves and whispers to a fawn.
The little fawn trembles too, basking in the Moon’s light,
and then as if beyond control its heels kick with delight!
Soon a rabbit joins in frisking; in unity they pirouette,
If the moon stayed up forever, they’d probably be there yet.
But fingers of sunlight soon start reaching
To draw back the curtain of the nighttime sky,
So rabbit, fawn and princess, must bid the moon good-bye.
As each one takes a final leap, a pirouette, plee or bow,
The day bursts full upon them; the moonlight—gone for now.
Yet they will wait most eagerly and mark each day, it’s true,
‘till 28 have come and gone and the Moon is at its full,
Then out in the field the rabbit will come, out of the woods, the fawn,
And out of the house the Moonlight Princess,
All to dance upon the lawn.
