I Know What is Coming

The Summer Grasses are starting to fade,
Daylight is slipping away,
I see the hint of color in the leaves,
and I know what is coming.
As blackbirds gather into flocks by the thousands
preparing to become a black ribbon in the blue sky
I feel the coming dormancy,
the future leaf drop,
the coming snow.
I feel the darkness coming,
and the dread.
I know what is coming...

  1. You have captured that sense of wonder and also that feeling of "No, not yet!" I think we are going to have a long, warm fall. I'm going to think positive! Beautiful lines, here.

  2. Quiet Paths, thank you. I am thinking of all the snow we shoveled last winter and I am not quite ready to do that yet! But, I am also thinking of the season's of life and how when the autumn of our life comes along we start to realize that winter is the next season and we are not ready for that end yet!

  3. The light shining through the leaves looks so pretty! I love your poem and how you've already noticed so many signs of the season changing.

  5. Hi Kathie

Well we all know what is coming and you captured it well. My "blackbirds" were at least seven shiny bright grackles in the yard Monday night.

    All the best.

  6. You expressed my feelings about the long winter ahead, but the beauty of autumn is a well anticipated buffer for me.

  7. Sandy, I am now. I was just in a bit of a depressed mood the day i wrote this, and i was thinking of the double meaning of autumn, as in, "the autumn of my life." But really, I was just dreading shoveling snow!

    Thanks guy!

Ruth, I am ready for Autumn's colors and coolness also. They it will be time once again to snuggle round the fireplace. I am ready for that also! I just don't want to shovel snow!
